Boldly I Approach

Rend Collective released their Art of Celebration album the year I was studying for my GCSE's. I remember listening to it when revising for my exams. It was genuinely a significant moment for my relationship with God.

I had listened to a famous sermon by Francis Chan on the Holiness of God, and remember being completely freaked out by a passage talking about angels, thousands of them, and creatures and lots of singing. I experienced a completely different understanding of God and His power.

Around the same week, I was listening to the album by Rend Collective and the song 'Boldly I approach' started playing. You can imagine my surprise when they started singing these lyrics;
"Boldly I approach Your throne
Blameless now I'm running home
By Your blood I come
Welcomed as Your own
Into the arms of majesty"

I'm sorry … ‘Boldly I approach God's throne’?? Had they read Revelation?

Revelation 4: 2-8
"At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby.

A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne…

From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder…

In the centre, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back...

Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings.

Day and night they never stop saying:
“Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,'
who was, and is, and is to come.”"

God's throne sounds incredible! I guess it would be. If you were the creator of the Universe you'd want a pretty cool throne. I just couldn't contemplate approaching this throne boldly … maybe slowly, very cautiously and being utterly terrified, but not boldly.

But, this is grace. We should never be able to approach God sat on a throne as spectacular as described in Revelation, but by God's grace we can, and by God's grace we can even do this boldly. When we pray, this is the throne we are approaching. This is the God we are approaching.

Sometimes we can forget who we’re talking to. This is the God of Revelation and the utterly incredible thing is that He cares about us, about the smallest things to the biggest things. He wants us to turn to Him with it all. All our hopes and dreams. Our thoughts. Our mistakes. Any stress from this lockdown. Any work issues. Any family problems. He's definitely big enough to handle it.

Isaiah 43:1
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine."

We are HIS! He summons us by name! This is amazing news! We belong to the most powerful, most glorious, beautifully loving God. This can give us rest, even in the heaviest storms.

Hebrews 4:16
"Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

Rend Collective weren't being heretical when they wrote the song. They just knew the crazy truth of the gospel. We are invited to the throne of God.

Therefore, have confidence that your prayers are heard by God.

He is more glorious than Revelation can describe, yet His love for you is too big to ever be fully grasped.

He is the creator of all things, yet He is faithful to us.

He is all-knowing, yet He still loves each one of us.

He is worthy of all praises, yet He listens to our requests.

He is beyond us, yet He brought himself to us.

Through Christ's suffering He has provided a way for us to boldly approach His throne of grace.
