Compassion
What would Jesus do?

I saw a man today, sat on the pavement.
He had a blanket, a bowl & a dog.
I wondered how he got to have no home,
And were alcohol & drugs to blame.
Then I thought,
What would Jesus do?

I saw a woman today, outside her home.
She had a bottle of wine & a roll-up.
I spoke to her to pass the time of day.
Her leccy was out & she had no food.
Then I thought,
What would Jesus do?

I saw a man today, in the supermarket.
He was in a suit, not wearing a face cover.
I greeted him with a smile behind my mask.
He pushed past me in the queue,
Then I thought,
What would Jesus do?

I saw a woman today, one I know quite well.
She told me her life was not worth living.
I tried to find some words to say,
Because I knew she’d had a bitter life.
Then I thought,
What would Jesus do?

I read my Bible today, Matthew chapter 12.
Jesus speaking of smouldering flaxes, & bruised reeds.
I started to ask what those words meant,
And wondered what they had to do with me.
Then I thought,
I began to see what Jesus would do.

I left my home today, just to go for a walk.
Tomorrow I will go to work, in a funeral home.
I thought that Jesus is here, wherever I go.
Jesus was always “moved with compassion”,
So, daily I will think,
What would Jesus do?
Then I will try & do it!
